158: The Labor and Love of Piecing a Life Together with Victoria van der Laan

Do you struggle to call yourself an artist? This conversation is for all of you out there with a non-linear path to embracing your artist identity. I resonate so strongly with Victoria van der Laan’s journey discovering ways she was always on a path to being an artist, and working toward a values-driven life both personally and professionally.  Her story is such a mirror to my own in ways that led to some valuable shared insights.

Victoria is a textile artist and mother of three working in downtown Albany, NY.  She carries quiltmaking forward in sewn paintings, and works to unearth the connection between women’s work and fine art.  Victoria strives to create a more equitable and sustainable planet in so many ways, including a sliding scale for her pricing and working towards a zero-waste practice.

This conversation gives practical insights into how Victoria works to solve the problem of pricing models and business structures that can respect the work, the artist, and the collector within growing subcultures centering concepts of shared abundance. Tune in and join us as we challenge how we think of ourselves and our relationship to our work as commodities.
