65: An American in Paris- constructing an art career abroad with Michele Landel
/

Absolutely loved my chat with Artist and Mom to 3, Michele Landel! Michele is an American artist who lives with her family outside Paris, France. We had a fascinating conversation about her studio practice. She has a home studio in a spare bedroom but also has a studio she commutes to in the heart of Paris (that she shares with two Italian artists!). We talked about her routines, juggling child activities and school errands and more. Michele also shared a bit about her experience diving in and building up an art career while living abroad. She talks about her decision to pursue showing in exhibitions rather than open an etsy shop or go a more commercial route.

Michele shares quite a bit about her process! She creates intensely textured and airy collages using burned, quilted, and embroidered photographs. She manually manipulates digital photographs to highlight the way images hide and filter the truth, then sews layers of paper together to create bandages and veils and to transform images into fragile maps. We talked quite a bit about her process and she shared more about her technique for collage and getting images printed on large fabric and scaling up her work in general. Michele had great things to say about making what you have work for you instead of feeling limited or controlled by your materials.

I was so inspired by this conversation and am in love with Michele’s gorgeous art. I hope you love this episode.

Love her work. My husband and I saw her work at a pop up show in San Francisco (Jen Tough Gallery). We left the show and had to turn back to buy a piece from her.
