Trigger Warning: Please note that in this episode, there are multiple mentions of the overturning of Roe v. Wade as well as references to abortion and human/civil rights violations in the United States of America.

This episode of the Artist/Mother podcast is a behind-the-scenes look at our third annual community-wide exhibition, “Painting At Night”. This year’s exhibit is at Collarworks Gallery in Troy, New York. We’re so grateful that we were able to record this episode live from the exhibit, and we can’t wait to share it with you.  When you tune in, you’ll get to hear a bit from our juror and curator, the fabulous Judith Braun, about her decision-making process for the exhibit. (You can also listen to episode 130 of the podcast where you can hear Judith’s recent interview on the podcast here and find her on Instagram here.)

We also chat with three artists whose works are featured in the exhibition: Jacqueline Strycker, Tamara Zibners and Sandy Clafford. Clafford, also known as The Queen’s Artillery is a full-time interdisciplinary visual artist and illustrator. She’s the Mom of two kids and she’s based in Brooklyn. Her work incorporates themes of empowerment, culture, and identity. Strycker, also from Brooklyn, is a Mom of a six year old who works for the School of Visual Arts. Her interests weigh heavily in pattern, domestic textiles, and printmaking. Tamara Zibners is in Roswell NM, managing her family’s rentals, being a full-time parent to her four year old, and creating art. Her background in photography and even her interest in music as a child influence her large scale digital paper collage work. All three artists give us a candid behind-the-scenes look at their unique and individual processes. We talk parenting, domesticity, and connection: the influences their lives and art.

This episode, at its core, is a connection point to the themes we explore time and time again at the Artist/Mother Podcast. It’s an episode rooted in the identity and tension of motherhood and being an artist. This conversation is the very crux of “Painting At Night”. Whether it’s balancing motherhood and connection, building community, or enhancing creative energy, this episode is a break from the chaos and a path towards giving yourself grace in this (and every) season.
