Sometimes we think of artists as either intuitive or conceptual, but Anna Ilsley defies this separation. Our conversation in this episode was a picture into Anna’s process of using drawing to tap into intangible concepts like intimacy and sensuality within archaic ideals like chastity, sin, and other societal expectations placed on women. She describes working through her process developing her understanding of the figures she depicts through the process of drawing itself, seeing what the medium can reveal as if excavating how form and concept can intertwine.
I know you will appreciate the humor with which she approaches some very serious topics, in an effort to be “cheeky” and “unruly” to defy the heavy expectations and restraints women are so familiar with. Our conversation took us through the worlds she creates depicting defiant women, and how her own practice creating her own world as an artist, embracing the ebbs and flows of motherhood and studio practice.
