165: Creating Your Own Rules to Break with Andrea Myers

/

For Andrea Myers, the process of creating a life as an artist and creating her work is symbiotic. An artist based in the midwest, Andrea explores the space between two and three dimensionality, hybridizing painting, sculpture and fiber arts in her stunning and typically large scale artworks.

From an early age Andrea was “dragged along to fabric stores” with her crafting mom, inspired by the tactility of the world and a childhood spent outside and in playful discovery. She has experienced many different avenues exploring her art career and took a big risk leaving her teaching position to pursue art. We discuss the steps leading up to that decision and how Andrea knew it was the right time for her to take the leap.

I also ask Andrea about her great ability to make the most of local opportunities. I consider Andrea an expert in getting support from small midwestern cities and states that appear to not have a lot going on for artists! We connect about the misconception that you have to be in NY as an artist or you “don’t exist” and talk about ways to mine resources where you are.

During this episode Andrea and I bond over our shared love of cooking as an alternative creative practice, whether or not we consider our textile heavy work “painting”, and the financial challenges of being a full time artist.
